Subject: DOS for Hamcomm? (newbie!)
I am a humble plug and play type, whose DOS experience
abruptly stopped in 1989.
I'm dabbling with Hamcomm on a Win98 machine. The task at hand is to write
an autoexec.bat file that disables all the DOS things that Hamcomm can't
cope with, like any and all extended memory management and multitasking.
All I need is to use a serial port and operate a UK keyboard - no audio
card, no mmd's other than perhaps the C drive.
The HD has partitions on it. If this is a problem, I can run OS and
application from floppies.
And oh, by the way... the processor is an Amdahl K-6.
As sorry as I am to admit to that, I am not how I can do all that. I'll try
to rephrase this:
1) What are the bare minimum OS components I need? E.g what other than
command.com, system.sys etc.?
2) Is there any way I can make sure that an OS compatible with the K-6 does
not generate internal interrupts? I have put together a minimalistic set of
system files from Win-95 that looks and feels like DOS, but seems to
generate a series of interrupts every few msec that interfere with the
Hamcomm decoding logic.
TIA!
Baffled, I remain.

As I understand it, the Hamcomm program is strictly a DOS program. You
cannot capture the COMM port full time in WIN 3.1, WIN95, or WIN98 - a
prerequisite for HamComm and other programs written for DOS that use the
HamComm interface. While it may at first appear that HamComm is working
correctly if run from WIN95 or WIN98, you will find it is operating at about
half speed. Two suggestions:
1. Consider putting the command lines in C:\WINDOWS\DOSSTART.BAT to
configure the computer as need be for the HamComm program and exit to DOS to
run HamComm.
2. As an alternative set up the desktop icon (use properties tab, advanced
button) to configure the autoexec and config setup as needed to run HamComm.
Force MS DOS mode when running HamComm.
