You know, I'm still, a little confused about what the advantages and
disadvantages of LinuXnet vs. Flexnet and all that. I read the X-net
web page, and they claim they can talk to Flexnet routers and do tcp/ip,
etc -- though I'm still a little unsure exactly what the advantages
of X-net/LinuxNet are -- as most of the juicy stuff, that is the user
comments are all in German. The x-net/linuxnet config files have a little
scheme where they attach serial ports to ip addresses -- and I assume
you can run xfbb from telnet -- though I haven't tried it, and I'm
hesitant to be the first on my block to puzzle together X-net/linuxnet.
On the IP convers chat rooms, some IP people are saying that they're having
trouble with Flexnet routers that are replacing Netrom routers
in some parts of the country, so apparently change to Flexnet is
happening -- though so far not here in Northern Ca. Yet I've read
messages from some of the Flexnet gurus that IP over Flexnet isn't
a problem. So, I'm a little befuddled trying to resolve the problems
people have with the claims that it all works super-duper.
Here where I am, seems the IP guys and the ax25 nodes are completely
separate deals. And that IP traffic never goes over the AX25 nodes --
which is just as well, since monitoring the local ax25 node, it is
just packed solid with BBS traffic moving around the area. And
also that the Stanford gateway has an excellent site, which covers the
east bay, where I am, pretty well, even though it's far away.
I've been trying to figure out if, for proper cooperation, I need to
install any kind of barriers to keep the two sides from communicating
-- that is if I have a computer with both ports on ax25 nodes and
connections to IP packet gateways. Though practically, I'd say the
node is so busy, that running IP over it would be an exercise in
extreme futility.

Hello Cathryn,
I am currently doing some experiments based on Linuxnet in order to
evaluate the possibility of using it as a "smart" gateway.
I am not a Flexnet fan neither an Xnet lover but the idea seems to me
very good and I am trying to evaluate the various possibilities
offered.

Yes LinuXnet as a piece of softare for linux incorporates 3 protocols,
Netrom , Flexnet and tcp/ip .It handles of course interfaces such as
serial ports or internal pipes (linux) in kiss mode for ax25 point to
point protocol or slip mode (for tcp/ip) or ethernet.
My experiment shows that it links a flexnet nodal without any problem
the only trouble is the node-ssid range affectation in the very last
version 1.18 ? I am still trying to find the command to do that ! .
It should also be able to act as a Netrom Nodal but because of lack of
interest in Netrom in Europe I did not conduct any test on it.
Yes, LinuXnet includes a tcp/ip stack , having its own ip number and
a router daemon allowing routing via flexnet, or Netrom interfaces.
It also incorporate a "ping server " .
The nicest feature being the automated "arp" and "routing" processes
allowing any ip station to get routed when connecting the first time
without sysop intervention !! .
The idea is very good because adding tcp/ip into a flexnet or netrom
protocol would help in expanding the routing "horizon" of those two
protocols (one is limited by a quality factor, the other one by a
travel time).
But ! at the moment on the 1.18 version we cannot use LinuXnet as a
