Subject: Psion 3a Palmtop and Packet/APRS
Hello to all.
Has anyone had a chance to play with the Psion 3a and either packet or APRS
??
Is there any suggestions... (no flaming please :) ) as to software
(freeware) for packet or APRS ??
Many thanks,
Bob Clermont

Hi Bob,
I've used my Casio Cassiopiea A-11 for a couple years now for packet. Rule of
thumb is that the handheld PC is designed to connect to a desktop for transfer
of data. In essence, it's like a modem itself. To have HPC talk to a modem
or
TNC you need a null-modem adapter between your HPC and TNC. You can get one
at
Radio Shack fairly cheap. You may need a gender changer to plug everything
together but otherwise the hardware is easy. Software....rumor has APRS
software coming out soon for the Windows CE platform. There is APRS software
out for the Palm Pilot system. Other packet software does not exist. BUT!!!!
The old days of packet one used any terminal software. A TNC is a modem of
sorts, the built in TERMINAL program that allows you to talk to your desktop
PC
works. ECHO must be ON to see what you are typing. Otherwise it's fiddling
with the parameters until you are satisfied with the way it's running. You
can't blow anything up. Most HPC's serial port is COM1 and runs at 9600 baud
to a TNC. 8 bit. That should do it. As far as a phone number like mine asks
for....just a bunch of random numbers...just to get the HPC-TNC to handshake.
It's really crude, no nice function keys. It's all typing in your TNC codes
and commands. Have your manual on hand. I run the A-11 with a Paccomm
PicoPacket TNC and a Alinco HT. It all fits in a fanny packet. It works
well.
Good luck and don't be afraid to experiment.

I started to write a very basic implementation of the aprs protocol
for the 3a but havent got very far :( Meanwhile you can get by with
the comms program - you can see the location strings on screen - and
capture them to memory for looking at later. You can even reply to
messages if you copy the format that appears on screen and put the tnc
into 'k' or non-cmd: mode having set UN proto first.
Here is a script for the comms prog which isnt fault free but might
gvie you some ideas for improvement...
!APRS Manual entry of mobile position
!
SETUP (BAUD=9600 :PARITY=NONE :DATA=8 :STOP=1 :HANDSHAKE=RTSCTS )
!Scriptfile to program TNC for APRS
QUERY "Position" ("DayDate DDHHMM", s1 :"Latitude (ddmm.mm)", s2:
"Long dddmm.mm",s3 :"Course (nnn)",s4 :"Speed (nnn)",s5 :"Comments",
s6 )
WAIT 4
CONNECT 20 GOTO fail1
SENDWAIT 20 "","cmd:" GOTO fail2
SEND "UN APRS VIA RELAY"
SENDWAIT 20 "","cmd:" GOTO fail3
SEND "BT /<s1>/<s2>N/<s3>W[";
SEND "<s4>/<s5>/";
SEND "<s6>"
SENDWAIT 20 "","cmd:" GOTO fail4
SEND "B E 0"
SENDWAIT 20 "","cmd:" GOTO fail5
SEND "B E 120"
EXIT
!fail1 is not getting serial to work
fail1:
ALERT "Serial isn't up"
EXIT
fail2:
ALERT "No cmd: prompt"
EXIT
fail3:
ALERT "Problem setting UNproto"
EXIT
fail4:
ALERT "BText didn't change"
EXIT
fail5:
ALERT "Beacon may not have txd"
EXIT
I have a much more complex one too... :-)
For just plain packet - you could do worse than PocPac a nice simple
split screen term program with some packet bbs scripts. To a search
for '3-LIB' or 'steve litchfield' on the web - he has a great software
collection.
I use pocpac to set up TNC parameters when I'm out mobile with the GPS
fitted.
