Subject: Need Advice on Wacky Mobile Packet Project
Hi, folks. This is my first post to this newsgroup, so please be gentle.
:-)
I'm KE6ARH from San Francisco, CA. I got a novice license a few years
ago out of curiosity about packet (not really interested in voice), but
I never really got my system set up so I could try it. Now, I think I
have a need.
I'm a participant in the Burning Man festival
(http://www.burningman.com/), a crazy science and arts event in the
middle of the desert near Gerlach, NV. The event is really fun; I highly
recommend it for anyone with a taste for tinkering.
ANYWAYS, I work for a (volunteers only) Web magazine
(http://www.pigdog.org/) that wants me to send reports and images from
the event. I thought about using a satellite phone, but it costs
~$10/minute, with a 1200 baud connect rate. Gah! That's just
prohibitively expensive.
So then I thought, WHAT ABOUT PACKET RADIO? I went out and bought Stan
Horzepa's "Practical Packet Radio," which is really really good. I also
went to the Ham Radio Outlet in Oakland, CA, and priced a Kantronics TNC
+ 2m radio at about $300.
So, this is my guess for how I could maybe make an Internet connection
from the desert: if I had a small mobile computer (KE6ARH-0) with a TNC
and 2m set in the desert, I could use TCP/IP over AMPRNet to connect to
ftp files to my home machine, (which would be KE6ARH-1). I know that the
bit rate is still low, but at least it's not eating into my wallet every
second! The home machine has a DSL line. I could then use telnet to
connect to the home machine and then ftp the files to another site on
the Internet where the Pigdog Journal people could post them to the Web.
So, here are my questions:
1) Is this even possible or legal with my Novice license?
2) Are there Internet gateways I can use so I don't have to set up my
own home gateway?
3) How am I going to get my packets home :-)? Gerlach is a very sparsely
populated area -- am I going to have to use a satellite?
4) Pigdog Journal (the Web mag) is non-profit, but does it still count
as a business?
5) Does anyone have a better design than the one I just gave? I'm really
floundering.
6) The event happens next week. Is there any way I'm going to be able to
get AMPRNet IP addresses for Nevada and California in a week? Or is that
just crazy?
Thanks a lot for helping out a complete newbie.

Estimados "Amigos"
consumidor poder tirar algum proveito directo-
A publicidade tradicional
(folhetos,placardes,impressos, radio,TV) é custosa e tem uma certo
resultado. A publicidade DIRECTA no computador do utilizador é muito mais
barata e efectiva, é dizer que a relação vendas/Investimento publicitßrio é
