Subject: software for MFJ-1224 CW/RTTY interface

Purchased an MFJ-1224 CW/RTTY interface so I can
use an old 80286 system for something in my
shack...the software I received from MFJ looks so
primitive compared to the more recent programs
out in cyberspace such as Hamcomm 3.1, etc. Does
anyone know other programs that work with this
interface because I have tried everything I can
find to no avail!...Programs like PKGOLD, CWTERM,
etc recognize everything but the receive data
from the interface unit (+/- 5v). MFJ tells me
that their program (circa 1990) is the only one
that works with their unit. thanks in advance for
any help from MFJ-1224 owners out there. NR8X, Rob

Subject: TRACKING SATELLITE MIR

Hello Simon,

Yes, you have enough equipment to listen in to MIR for as long as it remains
in
orbit. Rumor has it is supposed to be abandoned in August. 1 watt of power
to
a vertical should be sufficient as long as there are no obstacles between the
antenna & the portion of the sky MIR is travelling across. Now, 1 watt and a
vertical will leave you as the "small fish in the pond" however. It's similar
to working a rare DX station on HF. Every Tom, Dick, and Harry are trying to
work MIR at the same time you are. When I lived in Hawaii, the most amount of
stations trying to work MIR was six. All in Hawaii. There I used a 1 watt HT
and a small 3el yagi. I moved to Pennsylvania and I thought my equipment had
gone bad. When I saw MIR connecting & rejecting connects from VE3's to XE1 to
K6 to W1, I then knew what the problem was....hundreds of stations all on
145.985 FM trying to work MIR at the same time. The best time to work MIR is
during off hours...very early morning, mid-day when people are at work, or
sometimes very late at night. You can do it. I've worked MIR dozens of
times,
a few times even on voice. People here in the US are even working MIR with
HT's using the APRS software (Amateur Positioning Radio System). Good luck,
good hunting, & 73's.

Hi Simon, I am also interested in satellite tracking but don't yet have all
the
equipment I need. I just got the FT-847 which has sattelite tracking
capability
but have no idea how to get started. I've never operated any other mode other
than
HF and a little 2 meter ht. Should I set up for packet? Or another mode?
Any
suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks
Noel

Or move to VK. The most I've ever seen is about four stations at once here.
Actually, because of the lower demand, we do a lot more digipeating (unproto
messages) than it sounds like is possible over there.
