You would also have to rewrite all the software. Baycom
1200bps modems are designed to operate from a SERIAL port
(ie. have a 8250 UART or equivalent hardware) not just operate at
RS232 voltage levels

Then the following page might be of interest. With a USB hub and the
appropriate converter cables, this might be promising. I have already
overwhelmed the exist serial ports on my PC but the two USB slots are
gathering dust.

I noticed a couple while at the local computer-store a few days ago. I think
they were selling for about $20, but I may just be guessing there.. ;)
And they were no larger than the size of the usual null-modem.
No idea what sort of software you'd need, tho.. Will any of the packet-progs
work with USB?

The USB class drivers should create a "com" port device. Therefore, as long
as programs
do the usual open/close/read/write to com devices, you should be fine. If
the software tries to
talk to the hardware directly, then, that will be a problem.
