Up on this side of the globe, I find things pretty grim, primarily due
to lack of sunspots, although my mediocre antenna doesn't help either.

Try leaving your radio tuned to 14.100 MHz and listen for the NCDXF
beacons. There are 18 of them around the world transmitting on very
precise schedules. They're also on 18.110, 21.150, 24.930 and 28.200.

Whenver I'm not actually on the air, I run a beacon monitoring app on my
PC:

Do you have antennas (and privileges) for 80, 40 and 30 meter bands? A
decent wire antenna will give you some excellent long-haul DX when the
upper bands are dead. They're also the bands to use for short-haul
contacts during the day.

You might also consider monitoring a DX spotting cluster.

Telnet to dxspots.com and watch and wait as folks around the world
announce the appearance of DX stations. You can set filters control what
kind of spots you're interested in.

The setup info can be found at http://www.dxspots.com
