DID YOU TELL ANYONE ABOUT AMATEUR RADIO THIS WEEK?
--------------------------------------------------

 VK4 SILENT KEYS @ 2003 - 2004 WIAQ COUNCIL YEAR
VK4BS Jim Cunningham around the 19th or 20th of March (advised by vk4sj)

 VK4BS
Jim lived on Russell Island in Moreton Bay.
His funeral was held at the Alex Gow Funeral Home, Breakfast Creek
 Monday 24th of March.
Doug and June Sim along with Bernie McIvor VK4EJ and his wife attended
the funeral service, representing Jims Amateur friends.

 HAPPY BIRTHDAY PETER BROWN VK4PJ
90 years of age April 13!
Congrats to our Life Member !!

 VK4 COUNCIL
The WIAQ Honours Committee has considered a listing of Amateurs deemed
worthy of recognition for outstanding service and accomplishment. These
fine Amateurs were acknoledged at the WIAQ AGM just last week.

Again, this year, the Committee did not approved any 'Merit Awards and
Badges'. Why? Well although quite within the guidelines for such, they
were disappointed they did NOT receive ANY nominations for such.

 Approved were five 'DSA's'.

 Distinguished Service Award.
 John Gielis VK4JKL
John has been a very active member of Cairns Amateur Radio Club. John
has held the portfolios of President, Social Convenor, Repeater
Technician, and Liaison Officer. He has held the small Cairns Club
together, developed Packet system and foun d a new location for the
 Cairns Repeater, VK4RCA.

John is active in Field Day contests, JOTA, attends the TARC Conventions
and regularly provides News to the NQ hook-up. He also gathers together
the Far Northern Amateurs for the annual get-to-gether at Mission Beach.

John has been a good example of keeping the hobby alive in Far North
 Queensland.

 Ian Sutton VK4ZT
Ian has been an active member of the TARC, serving as Treasurer, WICEN
officer, Exams Invigilator. He is also trained in SES Communications and
has assisted on numerous occasions when SES is involved in searches or
cyclone activities. Ian presently holds the office of Examiner Group
Leader, is active in amateur club activities and brings great credit to
 amateur radio.

Ian is an extremely useful member of the North Qld Amateur Radio
fraternity and all are impressed by his abilities and energy.

 Robert (Bob) Mann VK4WJ
As well as being an active member of the TARC, Bob is a member of the
SES and has participated in numerous exercises and operations with SES,
as well as WICEN exercises. Bob has held a number of positions within
the TARC and at present holds the post of Activities Officer in an
 extremely active club.

Bobs phone number is published in the region as a contact to Amateur
Radio by the public. Bob Mann's involvement in the North Qld Amateur
Radio Convention held every two years is just one example of his
 outstanding service to amateur radio.

 Geoff Nelson VK4ZGF.
Geoff gained his licence in 1981 and has been very active in the
Maryborough Amateur Radio Club for most of this time and has been a
member of that Club's Committee for several years.

Geoff is the operator for WIAQ News broadcast from the Bundaberg Club's
two metre repeater. During the past ten years Geoff's dedication to this
duty has been exemplary with his friendly and professional approach to
check-in session with operators from Gympie, Maryborough, Bundaberg,
Gladstone, Rockhampton and Biloela calling in. Following the news Geoff
announces local Club's News, various Club Net times, followed by a
wanted and available for sale session [no prices of course].

 Dougal Johnston VK4EKA.
Dougal has been a member of the Darling Downs Radio Club for a
considerable time. A keen CW operator, he has always promoted Amateur
Radio and is keen on field days and activities to bring AR to the
attention of the general public. In times past, his trade took him to
remote places and he operated portable from many places around and
adjacent to Australia, giving many the chance to contact that area.

At present, he is Club President and organises the Amateur transceivers
at our meeting place in SES HQ as well as editing and producing the Club
 newsletter, "DDRC-Ink"
(On behalf of the WIAQ Honours Committee Guy VK4ZXZ / Bill VK4XZ)

The WIAQ AGM was held on 22nd March and was attended by about 30.
Members and guests were welcomed by Bayside Club president Paddy Dransfield
VK4JPD. WIAQ President Ewan Mcleod VK4ERM then chaired the meeting.

The meeting first stood in silence as a mark of respect as the names of
15 Silent Keys of the past year were read.

The business of the meeting then proceeded with reports from the President,
Treasurer and other offices of the division.

As there were only 12 applicants for the position of councillor there was
no election as such. However each applicant was individually approved by
 the meeting.
Ewan Mcleod VK4ERM was elected President so that the meeting could be
 continued under his chairmanship.

The meeting then proclaimed Distinguished Service Awards for 5 amateurs
who have served the amateur community in a manner deserving of special
 recognition.

There was one special item of business raised at the AGM.
This was to indicate that the members of this division wish our Federal
Councillor to move that the WIA (Federal) invite and encourage ordinary
members of State Divisions to attend as observers at the WIA Federal
Convention and AGM. This was considered necessary as the only members of
WIA are the 7 State Divisions. There is a concern that some may use a
legalistic interpretation of this to exclude members of the divisions
without whom the WIA would not exist. The WIA Federal AGM this year will
be held in Adelaide. Next year it may be held in another state.
This gives an opportunity for ordinary members to observe their
 organisation at work.

Some further discussion was made regarding WIA exams service performance.
Federal education officer Ron Smith VK4AGS was on hand to answer questions.

Following the meeting, members adjourned to the eatery at the Redlands
 Sports Club for lunch.

Now I've save this one for last. Maybe it should be in the wierd and
 wonderful section.

WIAQ President Ewan Mcleod has been sorting through a hoard of bits and
pieces belonging to our organisation. Among the finds was an old trophy.
The original reason for its existence has been long forgotten.
However the inscription it bears indicates it was originally awarded to
the holder of the callsign VK4BB.

It was therefore decided to to award the trophy to none other than the
current holder of the callsign VK4BB, yes to our QNEWS editor and presenter
Graham Kemp in recognition of the fine service he continues to provide.

Graham was present at the AGM to receive the trophy.
He already has a place in mind as to where to display it.
