ALARA Net is held each Mondays on 3.588 MHz, commencing at 1000 UTC.
The next Australian ALARAMEET will be in 2005, to be held in Mildura.
WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- DIGITAL
The ARRL High Speed Multimedia (HSMM) Working Group is surveying the
amateur community to gauge interest in IEEE 802.11b "Hinternet" activity.
The HSMM Working Group encourages spread-spectrum communication modes
including such protocols as IEEE 802.11b operating on Amateur Radio
frequencies under FCC Part 97 rules. It's adopted Hinternet (a contraction
of "ham" and "Internet") as a way to describe the technology.
"The primary goal of the survey is to encourage amateurs to get on the air
and start playing with this cheap digital microwave gear."
Hinternet RadioLocal Area Networks (RLANs) typically use direct-sequence
spread spectrum between 2412 and 2437 MHz and are capable of simultaneously
carrying audio, video and data signals. Hinternet aficionados adapt
commercial 802.11b interfaces designed for Part 15 operation to amateur use.
File-sharing and e-mail, network gaming and pop-up chat are just the tip
of a titanic iceberg, it's been predicted.
Close on 12 months ago now VK4YAR better known as Mr VK4DGQ, predicted
the growth of AR to come from this WiFi area, Brismesh being just an
example. Interesting to see the Linton-Harrison 2003 paper we spoke of
last week appears to echo Allans thoughts. Maybe just asHam Radio grew
during the aerly 80's from CBer's WiFi will be this century's AR Saviour.
WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- FINAL FRONTIER
AMSAT-VK HF Net.
2nd Sunday each month.
April through October 1000 UTC 3.685 MHz
SA AMSAT TO HOLD AMSATCON2003 on May 10
SA AMSAT will hold an amateur satellite conference in Gauteng on
May 10. What was an annual event in the past will be reintroduced
to stimulate interest in amateur satellites and help newcomers to
learn more about this fascinating part of Amateur Radio.
Billed as AMSATCON2003 (Amateur Satellite Conference 2003) the conference
will offer something of interest to every radio amateur. A
meeting to take SA AMSAT forward will follow the conference in the
late afternoon.
WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- INTERNET --- THE HAMS DOMAIN
Last week we told you of the VK4 Governments plan of installing WiFi
in official buildings in that state, including theatre foyers and
rail stations.
Well in the USA you may soon get a surprising bonus when you dine at the
Golden Arches. This, with word that McDonald's restaurants in three
U.S. cities will be offering one hour of free high-speed Internet
access to anyone who buys a promotional meal.
Ten McDonald's in Manhattan New York began offering wireless WiFi, or
802.11b, Internet access on Wednesday, March 12th. By the end of
2003 McDonald's plans to extend the access to 300 restaurant
locations in New York City, Chicago and a yet to be announced
California city.
Big Mac, you want WiFi's with that?

IRLP Mate wanted
A 14 year old US Girl would like to chat with VK on IRLP.
Her Father, Kevin Halloran can be contacted on email at
kevinh@metatec.com
Feel free to work out a sked with him.
Peter Ill-mayer advises of the release of an automated script for IRLP nodes
that takes the hassle out of running QNEWS and AR-Newsline. No more manual
configuring, its all installed via a few simple commands.
Further from Geoff Gatward is that this package will download the various
news segments, then allow you to broadcast them locally.
Features include:
Error checking for failed / incomplete downloads prior to broadcast
Ability to send DTMF commands to disable/re-enable repeater timeout
(selectable on/off) PLUS
10 minute and 5 minute warning announcements prior to broadcast time.

WW SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS --- SOTA
Summits On The Air (SOTA) in Ireland got off to a good start on Saturday
the 15th of March, helped by some of the best weather they had seen for
many months.
Tonlagee, which is 817 metres above sea level was, we think the first
Republic of Ireland SOTA on the air, activated by a team of six,
which included Joe EI7GY.
Joe would like to thank everyone who helped him to launch SOTA in EI, and
he promises to be back on the hills again soon.
