Yes, I'd agree with that - some of the racist comments coming out of
VK-Land have quite shocked me. I wouldn't simply say they're racist
or "borederline", I'd say that they're way out of line and devoid of any
understanding and empathy.

I'm not sure why people think that for The Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, to
say sorry for genocide a decade after the Governor General recommended it
is "controversial".

The controversy arises from those who consider that inappropriate.

Holocaust denial is a criminal offence in many European Countries - maybe
in time the same should apply in Oz so far as the deniers of the Stolen
Generations are concerned?

Racism is most certainly not within the spirit of amateur radio.

Some on here have really come out in their true colours. The sad thing
is, I doubt they consider themselves racist, but solid citizens.

How can any Australian seriously assert - as a VK did on here, that racism
in Oz is a thing of the past and disappeared 40 years ago? The people best
qualified to make a judgement on that are those on the receiving end - not
those dishing it out.

It confirmed my suspicions - Rudd's got an uphill struggle on his hands.

But on the brighter side, some VKs who have had personal direct experience
and a real understanding of the issues, have denounced those racist
comments, so that's encouraging.

After a decade of government dithering and intransigence, change is now
on its way, and most Australians seem to be getting behind Rudd on that.

The older generation grew up with these racist policies - they have closed
minds - they aren't going to change. Rudd is doing the right thing by
focusing on the younger generation, with pupils, teachers and parents.

National Schools Sorry Day is an encouraging sign.

Australian Schools National Sorry Day in 2007 celebrated the 10th
Anniversary of the National Inquiry into the forcible removal of
Aboriginal and Torrres Strait Islander children - the Bringing
The Home Report.

Following Kevin Rudd's apology on behalf of the federal parliament on
13 Feb 2008, Australian Schools National Sorry Day on 26th May 2008
will appropriately be entitled "Celebrating The Apology - A New
Beginning".

The dawn of a new era!

It's wonderful to see so much effort being put into acknowledging and
righting the wrongs of the recent past, amongst schools, teachers
children, parents, the churches and the wider public in Oz.

So many good and kind people seem to be getting behind this.

Quote:

The National Sorry Day Committee (NSDC) joins the Stolen Generations and
Aboriginal Australia in celebrating the monumental act of Acknowledgement
and Apology by the new Australian Parliament that took place on 13
February 2008.

We take heart that through the Apology we can move forward united, towards
a healed, just, and reconciled Australia. The Australian Schools National
Sorry Day was one component of the National Sorry Day Committee's "WALK
Your TALK & Bring Them Home" 10 Year Anniversary Campaign. [2007]

Members of the National Sorry Day Committee have been delighted by the
interest and support of so many schools for the Apology itself, and who
have recognised and commemorated National Sorry Day during the course of
the past ten years.

The National Sorry Day Committee (NSDC) is inviting every Australian
School to participate in the AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS NATIONAL SORRY DAY on the
26th May 2008.

The program involves national initiatives and activities and focuses on
four of the Recommendations of the report of the National Inquiry into the
Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their
Families:

Bringing them Home Report: Recommendations: 5a, 7a, 8a and 9a.

First and foremost the campaign involves individuals, church groups,
community groups, corporate groups, education facilities, private
enterprises and local state and federal politicians throughout Australia
adopting a recommendation and assisting in its implementation and complete
fulfilment.

The NSDC believes that the AUSTRALIAN SCHOOLS NATIONAL SORRY DAY is a
wonderful initiative to celebrate the Historic Apology by the Prime
Minister to the Stolen Generations for the past policies of forced
removals.

The NSDC believes the Apology has, and will, continue to strengthen the
reconciliation process and brings even more cause to celebrate National
Sorry Day 2008 in its 10th year of commemoration.

RECOMMENDATION 5a.

APOLOGY:

1.Officially acknowledge the responsibility of their
predecessors for the laws, policies and practices of
forced removal;

2. Negotiate with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission a
form of words for official apologies to Indigenous individuals, families
and communities and extend those apologies with wide and culturally
appropriate publicity; and

3.Make appropriate reparations as detailed in following recommendations:

RECOMMENDATION 7a.

SORRY DAY: That the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, in
consultation with the Council for Aboriginal Reconciliation, arrange for a
national `Sorry Day' to be celebrated each year to commemorate the history
of forcible removals and its effects.

Encouraging news.
