We all have a car so it is one subject we probably all start from the one point.
We have one and we have to pay for it.
Bob is right about Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon. They are successful because
they give what most people need.
On fuel economy the European small diesels are better than the Toyota Prius which
I think was nothing more than an experiment.
It is neither enviro friendly or economical.
Four wheel drives are used here for caravan or boat towing because of the rule
that the unladen towing vehicle must be heavier than the laden caravan.
The larger Holden and Fords just make the grade for the smaller long distance
touring caravans.
I recently read an article by an oil market economist who believes that in OECD
countries the price of petrol will not have an effect on usage until oil reaches
US$150 to $200 a barrel.
The rise in the last three years has had no effect on demand in those countries.
An example, it is still cheaper for me to drive to Melbourne than for my wife
and I to go by plane or train.
It would have become marginal recently except for the fuel levy the airlines
had to place on tickets.
When fuel availability becomes restricted because of either rationing or price
rationing comes into effect, then there will be a switch to small light cars.
At US$200 a barrel we will be paying about A$2.25 to A$2.75 a litre.
I will then be going by train.
David drew attention to the EEC rules on CO2 emissions.
It should be noted that EEC is rethinking their CO2 decisions because they
have realised that they have blundered in what they thought was practical.
This applies in particular to their biofuels proposals.

There are many articles on the problems of implementing biofuels such as ethanol.
Nitrogen fertilisers are one of the major difficulties.
The effect on food prices has already had adverse effects.
In Europe and soon also here the regulations on car specifications, are all
aimed at reducing CO2 and similar emissions. It is aimed at the wrong target.
Because the politicians will not acknowledge the 800 pound gorilla in the
corner of the room their legislation is distorted from what is required.
It is the availability of fuel stupid !

The Shell CEO has now acknowledged that the petroleum industry will not be able
to meet demand by 2015. Most real experts believe that is a few years late.
This a dramatic admission ! It is a complete turn around for the industry
although Total has already made a similar statement.
The industry has now brought the crunch time 20 years earlier than their
previous statements. The reason, their share price and the stock exchange rules.
They cannot hide knowledge of conditions that will affect their share price.
It is incredible that a statement with implications like this have not had
more than a perfunctary mention in the press and no reaction whatsoever from
the politicians. This will affect everyones life, work and food.
