The 3.9 L Holden and the 4.1 L Ford both return about 30 mpg, the later
models even better than that. They are safe cars. The fuel consumption in
metrics is gauged in litres per 100 km, and 30 mpg is just under 9 L per
100km. My consumption on LPG is not as good as that of course as LPG is
not as efficient as petrol. I get the equivalent of about 25 mpg but there
is a significant cost advantage even so.
Yes, the "good old days" of car repairs have gone, but so also for a
significant period of use the days of car repairs have almost gone too.
For my first three cars, first was 62 years ago - an A model Ford, I did
all my own maintenance and repairs. I had to as I was young and could not
afford to pay a garage. You needed to decoke the engine about every 10 000
miles, grind the valves and then reassemble the engine. After 60 or 70 000
miles you had to take the engine out for a rebore, new rings and
remetalled bearings. Now? No decokes needed, no valve grinding, and
locally built engines so cheap that after 200 000 or 300 000 km you either
put in a new engine, or, more likely, bought another car new or with low
mileage. Don't talk about the "good old days", Warren, they were not all
that good.Better the days when most car repairs have gone altogether,
thanks to better technology and improved lubrication and fuels.
