I like the story of the rise and fall of Jaguar. The SS was the first car
I ever drove just after WW II. It was a long, low, rakish car witha very
narrow windscreen and extremely fast. My father, who owned it, explained
that is was safer to call it a jaguar rather than an SS for obvious
reasons, just like people who had proudly owned German Shepherd Dogs,
changed the name to 'Alsatian'.

I had never really known about SS - Jaguar, particularly when the were
amalgamated wit Daimler at one time.

The Daimler with it's preselector gearbox and fluid flywheel was th car i
took my first test in. The car was RH drive and, as far as I know, made in
Englsnd, yet I have seen film from WWII where Heinrich Himmler had three
identical cars, numbeed SS1,SS2 and SS3, rather than the Mercedes
preferred by Hitler. THe name Daimler as in Daimler Benz goes back to the
begginnings of motoring yet the ENglish version I drove did not seem to
have any connection with Germany. This has been a lifelong puzzle to me.

p.s. The preselector box contributed toward my failing my first test. The
examiner didn't seem to understand the strange way of changing gear, where
the 'clutch' was in fact the gear change pedal. He must have been very
confused :-)
