I have been looking around for a conversion table to show the formula for
translating cc into cu ins but no luck. Even my packet calculator (Made in
NJ) which, alongside cm to ins and metres to yards does Galls to Us Galls
etc; doesn't have cc to cu ins. I think I worked it out from the Cobra 727
(727 cube) which was 12 litre (1,888 to be exact). I have onlt seen three
of those in my entire life. You can probably work out the most popular
Chevy engine froam that.

We have a programme called Top Gear and, yes, I know there is an American
version. People in London where they can afford them, do drive SUVs and
the Escalade is quite popular. I have only seen one in my area.

The joke on Top gear is that American cars unlike European, are not made
to go around tight corners. From the cars they show, they could well be
right. I am not in the wealth bracket to afford a Porsche 911 or a Ferrari
so I will never know. The intention seems to be with EU cars to get the
most power out of the smalles engine possible. The streamlining idea first
turned opm with the Ciroens, especially the DS 19 - 21. I found the most
economical sped was around 62.5 mph (100 km/h) I found out about the
sudden onset of the aerodynamic effect at 56/57 mph came from being a
glider pilot and studying aerodynamics. As I say all family cars seem to
be most economical at arond 70mph now.

There are slight annoyances with some cars like the Corsa, though named as
a vauxhall, it is GM and, a few years ago, after 600 miles at 70 mph I
wanted to look under the bonnet and check the water and oil. I spent ages
looking in all the normal placeson the right hand side and couldn't find
it until a passing mechanic pointed it out on thelwer left hand side near
the door. I presume that they left it there, even on a RH drive car
because it will be sold under other names all over Europe where they are
LH drive - annoying.

The last car I had was aFiat, very economical and surprisingly powerful
but, on our motorways I rally would like to have a cruise control,
especially now when most people are happy to stay in the centre lane doing
69 mph with just a few doing 80 mph in the outer lane which they can get
away with, though it is technically illegal. The Fiat is all italian made
just as the french ones are all French made, I wish we still had British
cars made by British owned car firms but they have almost disappeared by
now.

We do make a racing car, the McLaren Mercedes, all scottish made, except
for the engine which is made in England, the joke is that the only German
thing about the Merc engine is the badged riveted to the top.

Cars like the TVR, now owned by a Russian internet billionaire were made
near me but the engine was - guess what ? a 5 Litre Chevy.

I am no petrol head because, as you have probably guessed, it is far more
fun to sail around in the sky with no engine. Can't afford that either
now.
