Yes, the MDI web site gave one of the options of the air car as being a
heater and a small i/c motor to top up the compressed air cylinder.
They also mentioned making production/marketing arrangements withan
American firm in addition to the arrangements with the Indian firm TATA.

It is worth mentioning that several designs for alternative cars were
around as long ago as the 1920s/30s. One of them had 'dynamotors' on each
wheel, making it capable of what we nowadays call 'Regenerative braking'
as well as a very small, top up motor + generator.

A lot of 'modern' inventions or, more correctly re-inventions come from a
long time ago. The one thing the old version didn't have was any kind of
solar generation. There were light sensitive valves which could have
generated power but no need to explain why that idea was not even worth
consideration.

The main reason for alternatives was that, even then, inventors and
scientists thought that the internal combustion engine with a gearbox was
an out of date idea.

The only reasonable alternative to the 19th century engine has been the
Wankel rotary engine which, I think, is still used. I remember the Mazda
R80 which was quite successful, The Wankel is still a good idea though I
don't know why it hasn't spread.

Next time you are driving along, remember that you are using basically
19th century technology, all the modern improvements are really mostly
cosmetic. Such devices as Satnaff do nothing to improve the performance of
the car, any more than go faster stripes.
