Hi Pete and all,
Not to worry about pollution, today's gas turbines efficiently burn fuel
with few harmful emissions, that is unless you're a greenie on a CO2
rampage. The beauty of the beast all along is its ability to burn any
light oil so even refined oil from McDoobie's frier will do nicely. On
the other hand a Diesel engine does the same thing and doesn't cost a
king's ransom over its lifetime.
I really don't know a whole heck of a lot about plantation locomotives
burning waste cane but I'm sure it has an interesting smell. Coming into
the modern age, I saw a TV presentation on how sugar is made, the mill is
a marvel of engineering. The heart of it is a boiler that produces steam
for processes and has enough capacity to spin turbine generators that
power the plant. Not only is the mill completely self sufficient but
produces a surplus of electricity backfeeding the power grid. As long as
the mill is operating the locals get their power from it easing the load
on the grid. I wish I could remember what they call the stuff but it's
the spent ground up cane after the sugar is extracted, the mill and
surrounds eagerly gobble up what otherwise would be waste.
