Tony, that sounds very much like some of the old stationary engines used
by dairy farmers in this are about 55 years ago. Most ran on diesel, block
oil or power kerosene. The one where I boarded ran the milking machine and
the cream separator. It was a MacDonald diesel which would run on crude
oil. We used diesel fuel. To start the thing you put in a hinged piece of
steel which held the intake valve open so that there was n compression.
Then you inserted a handle into the flywheel and spun it as hard as you
could and when it got some revs up the decompression thingy was flipped
out and the engine fired up. It had a wet liner which had to be changed
every few years. You cold not turn the engine over by hand against the
compression which was quite high.
The next door neighbour had an engine by I think Southern Cross which
backfired with an enormous bang on startup. We would hear a big bang and
someone would say "There's Stewart starting his milking."
