Now, you really do not know this country. Build dams? Every river in the
southwest of this state (and there are only a few of them) is dammed
already but for drinking water, serving the metro area of Perth and towns
along the pipelines. Perth supplies Kalgoorlie which is 600 km away in the
desert and all the towns between. There are dams on the Wungong,
Swan,Serpentine,Canning, Harvey, Stirling Dam, Wellington,Harris
River.Maybe I missed one or two. All with dams already but none of any
use for electricity generation. The highest mountain on the west coast is
the Darling Range, height 1000 feet. Just a hill in most countries. One
reason for the building of desalination plants on the coast, is that there
is no spare water left anywhere in the south of the state where the major
area of population is. Perth also draws on the artesian basin on which the
city is built. All the rivers in the southwest are quite small and narrow
and would never be of any use to generate electricity.South Australia is
in much the same if not a worse situation.A dry state with only the Murray
of any size. Victoria and NSW do exactly as you suggested with hydro
electricity in the Snowy mountains, Tasmania likewise.
Now if by flood control you mean Queensland or Northern NSW you might have
something there. I have been asking the same question.
Crocodiles? In spite of Mr Dundee unless we live in the extreme north we
never see one single croc in the rest of the vast countryside except in a
zoo.Why do you Americans see Crocodile Dundee as the average Australian?
He is unique, just a comedian. Might as well say that the Marx brothers
were average Americans.
Now that will stir something up. He'll start throwing frogs any moment
now.
Bob VK6BE.
wouldn't it make more sense to build dams and
generate it? Then you not only get "free" electricity but water for crop
irrigation, (more Australian produced food) potable water and the added
benefit of flood control?
Just another reason to eliminate the greenies and crocs always need to
eat too. Funny bloke this one, looks like broccoli, tastes like chicken.
