Hi,
I installed a heatpump system a few years ago.
The efficiency of the system can be as high as 300%.
The electricity to drive the small system that I have is about 1.5 KW.
The output (as heat) is about 4.5 KW.

My system is an air-source system, it extracts heat from the outside air.

It's not all plain sailing. That 300% efficiency is only obtained when the
outside temperature is above 10 deg C. When the outside temperature falls
to 0 deg C then the efficiency of the system falls to about 100%. For the
1.5 KW input only 1.5 KW output.
So it is of limited use, not much good in the depths of winter if the outside
temperature never rises above 0 deg C. In those conditions I use gas fired
central heating.

That's why ground source heat pumps are a better bet, but they cost more to
install.

As electricity costs more per KWH than natural gas then the benefits are
marginal in my case.

But if you only have electricity as a source of energy then heat pumps
should be considered.
