Hi Ian and all,
Geothermal in the UK? That's a new one on me but anything is possible I
suppose. It does come in handy in cold climates being it's done the same
way Con Edison in New York has been doing it since forever, after the
superheated steam passes through turbines generating electricity they're
not done with the "waste steam" quite yet, they heat buildings with it.
Right, it's light and not heat the solar panels use so the output is
determined by the intensity and duration of sunlight which with today's
substrate materials can be more than most people realize. The biggest
hurdle to be overcome is installation cost which in many areas is partly
at least covered by government rebate, trouble is the average Joe can't
afford the initial outlay regardless of the rebate. Somehow things would
go smoother and the greenies happier if the government subsidized the
costs rather like an insurance pool spreading the cost around but they're
in business to make money too. Yeah, hold onto it until the last moment
squeezing every penny of intertest until they bleed. Before I go
completely off on a rant I'll conclude this paragraph with what my friend
in New South Wales has in mind, solar hot water which carries a far less
initial cost.
Oh I know all about what you've been through this winter, my friend in
Edinburgh keeps me in the pipeline. Never mind the snow, GET USED TO IT
and stop whinging about a few spells of below freezing temperatures.
Remember that stiff upper lip? If its not frozen starch it, you don't
want those above 40 degrees laughing at you now DO you? (;->) Eh, if you
do ask Pete on the frozen shores of Lake Simcoe how much it costs him to
keep from freezing you'd have to look up the current exchange rate and
crunch the numbers, not that they'd mean a whole heck of a lot
considering the difference in fuel prices which is largely unknown
without doing even more homework. Just too many variables for my brain to
handle?
I know what you mean, I'm eager for enough warming where day/night heat
management and warm clothing will warrant shutting off the furnace too.
Carbon footprint??? I'd be in big trouble if I type the words that come
to mind but I'll say that gas doesn't produce carbon and the greenies can
choke on CO2 for all I care, I'd ather burn coal which IMO smells great
wafting through the neighborhood. Eh, come to think of it today's boilers
don't produce any noticable smells, smoke, fly ash or anything resembling
days gone by. Here's a clue for you, I mentioned Con Edison serving New
York and guess what they burn right in the heart of the city.
"I am not alone."
+1
