Yes Ray. We had trams in three cities prewar and just after WW2. Perth had
lines which travelled the 10 or so km through Victoria Park across the
Causeway and a branch went round through South Perth to Como. Another line
went out west through Suniaco to Claremont. Fremantle and
Kalgoorlie?Boulder also had electric trams.

The trams were replaced by trolley buses also with overhead wires some
time during the war. The problem with trolley buses was that they had to
move around on the road and they were a nuisance to vehicular traffic in
the narrow streets and they were finally replaced by diesel buses, with
trials now with hydrogen fuelled buses.

Perth's transport system has been greatly upgraded by the new train
systems, fast electric trains replacing the diesels and steamers in the
metro area. New lines have been laid to northern suburbs and to Mandurah
aboutm 60 km south and there were plans for another line north.

I don't think anyone mourned the passing of Perth's trams and trolley
buses. the trams were noisy and they blocked traffic in the narrow
streets.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE
