Well Pete the item is not about CO2, it was about the energy density of
petrol.
It is just that it illustrates how hard it will be to find a substitute for
oil and its products.
Can you imagine a TV station with 2 or 3 thousand employees all mounted on
bicycles supplying the power for the transmitter ?
No, neither can I, so I guess we will have it all coming via the internet.
But then, how much power is used by the internet ?
Somehow I think we will be using coal to generate electricity for a long time
to come. I see where there is a controvesy in the UK about a new coal fired
power station in Kent.
Despite all the flapping around about power generation, those that are
screaming in the streets about renewables have not yet come up with an
alternative to freezing in the dark.
Which all reminds me, I have been looking for reports on the susceptibilty of
the telecommunications system to a reduction in available oil and its
products. I have found reports on all sorts of industry from cement making
to the manufacture of furniture but for something that is so fundermental
these days, absolutely nothing.
For instance, transoceanic cables, how much plastics and other derivitives of
oil are involved to say nothing of fuel for cable laying ships.
If anyone has ideas on this I would be interested.
