How easy it is to confuse a particular technology with the (cheap) way some
choose to implement it. And how easy it is to blame technology for a
(smoke) problem when the real cause may be fair wear and tear, and/or a
lack of maintenance.
GM produced some really large 2 stroke diesel locomotives in the 1960's
(the 42 and 421 classes in NSW come to mind) but they produced no more
smoke than their 4 stroke counterparts. Their distinctive sound was
something else.
I have a chainsaw and a brush cutter, both of which use conventional
fuel/oil mix technology. I certainly wouldn't consider them as being smoke
producers, beyond the intial starting period. My totally clapped out 8HP
Honda 4 stroke motor on the ride-on mower is something else again, until it
really warms up. Suffice to say I'm not bothered by mosquitos, and the
local apiarists are delighted, hi.
Cheers ... Ray
