At the Indianapolis 500 this year, those cars ran on 100% corn
ethanol. The traditional fuel (at least for the past few decades)
has been methanol. Ethanol gave better mileage so they ran
smaller fuel tanks. Either alcohol in an engine with a high
compression ratio (the octane of ethanol is about 115) produces
more power than gasoline.
We use E85, 85% ethanol for flex fuel vehicles, for two reasons.
First the gasoline makes it undrinkable, and that 15% gasoline
makes for much better cold weather starting. Straight ethanol
doesn't vaporize well below freezing.
