I think there's more to it than energy density.
Up to 30% petrol can be added to diesel to improve the cold weather
characteristics of some diesel, but the higher octane rating (cetane
rating for diesel) of petrol doesn't produce a more explosive mix and cause
engine damage as bush mechanics would suggest might happen. In fact
the octane rating of the petrol and the cetane rating of the diesel are
both reduced when the products are mixed together.
Where are all the industrial chemists when you need them?
