˙Hi Bob .. Ah yes, the Merc diesel. Well we might have seen just the odd
one in all those "growing up years", but I can't recall a VW Golf D.
(I passed my motorcycle test in '64 then car test in '65, 16 and 17 years
old resp.)
I'm sure the diesel-engine technowledgy (?? Hi!) was very young, in this
country anyway, (in terms of what was available to us then) diesels were
genrally very smokey/fumey.
It cost much less, about a third of what petrol was (4 shillings and 5 pence)
(unless I dreamed that one HI!) but even buses an coaches were still petrol
and the only chance for an ordinary person to have a diesel would have been
a beaten-up Ex. GPO van ... they might have been Morris J1 with rubber wings/
fenders. I believe quite a few found their way into narrowboats on the canals.
(the engines, Oh, and 4/5p was per gallon, not liter!) Yes 4 gallons and
change from 1 pound!
Unleaded is currently 1.2 UKP/litre and diesel 1.35 UKP/litre ...How You?
Is it still roughly 2 Austrailan Dollars= 1 Pound sterling?
Cheers, Bill. G4LML ...........73
