As I see it, it will use some of the otherwise waste heat of the combustion
process, which normally goes out the exhaust pipe or has to be fed into the
cooling system. The mist is turned into steam, adding to the pressure on the
pistons, thus producing more energy for less throttle opening.

More modern engine designs which were more economical and perhaps fussy about
what was added to them, plus the fact that water could be left in the engine
causing damage.

LPG seems to be the way to go at the moment or chip fat.
