Sodium and water. Yes I saw that experiment in a high school chemistry
class. Spectacular. The sodium skated round flashing sparks.
The teacher in conducting the experiment warned us about the properties of
sodium in water by telling us about an incident in a science class at that
school some years before.
The fume cupboard had no glass in its sides. He told us that some helpful
student had noticed that the bottle of sodium did not have much liquid in
the bottle and so he filled it with water from the tap. The master saw him
and grabbed the bottle and threw it in the fume cupboard and shut the
window. The resulting explosion blew the glass out of the fume cupboard
inflicting cuts on the student and teacher. They were lucky. There was
still no glass in the cupboard when I attended lessons there.
But to get back on track, if injecting water with the fuel is so effective
why is it not done in the ordinary run of car engines. We could use
anything which reduces fuel consumption. Incidentally I did go to the
Internet regarding the SAAB, but found nothing about water injection in
the fuel system. That does not, of course, mean it is not done.
Why have not other manufacturers done something similar if it is an
effective means of enhancing engine performance and reducing fuel
consumption? No aeroplanes please - cars!!
