Hi Peter and all,
This is a bit narrow in scope, I sure hope someone else chimes in and
mentions what went down on HIS car radio. Actually mine at the time was
removed from a 1956 Buick and ran off a model train transformer, later
the filament winding of a TV power transformer. Those old tube type car
radios were made for DX and I found that out from some of the local radio
heads but I was the one with 50' of wire in the back yard for a crystal
set, that worked better than the car antenna.
Oh as usual I confuse you like everyone else, Lenny of Motorhead, not
Kravitz. Oh, I almost forgot to mention The Cars! (;->)
As for Jean, most of my listening was done with an early 7 transistor
radio under my pillow trying to fly under mom's radar. I swear she could
hear a fly fart in the next county! Being K2ORS he'd sometimes talk about
ham radio and one of his famous quotes is "Speaking of Amateur Radio this
is WOR 710 New York." I think he may have lived in Essex county
somewhere, I'm not sure but it wasn't too far into the city but in any
case when traffic was jammed (when isn't NY jammed?) he'd broadcast from
the transmitter in Carteret NJ. I never knew he may be sitting under
those tower beacons outside my bedroom window, just a sneak out of the
house and a 20 minute bike ride away. Yup, he was the father of so many
radio talk show hosts and wannabe comedians and never knew his children,
poor imitations of one of the greatest story tellers of all time. He had
the nack, no script, everything just flowed out of that creative mind and
spread across the continent via RF.
Speaking of radio hoaxes we had our share of fun at the station too. One
of our favorites was the mystery record contest, you're probably familiar
with the format. The hoax was the prize, we were so cheap we didn't even
mail it, we dropped the record (the mystery prize) in the mail box and
ran. Mine was a music show mostly because I was usually in no condition
to do much besides load the tape and ID every 30 minutes. Oh you know
SD&RR I'm sure! Then there was the underground network, often times some
other late night DJ would find him/herself being interviewed on my show
and never even knew about it. Ah the marvels of Phone Phreaking, make the
telco lines work for you and not the other way round.
Now if Melanie would get the heck out of my head! I'm trying to remember
Alyson Steel "The Night Bird" on WNEW-FM who sounded like the consumate
head, supplied half the music I played (3 second cue spots and no DJ
banter was perfect for the old Ampex 701) and often found herself on the
AM side while the music played on the FM side. Heh, her husband Ted was
one door down at WPIX-FM and the morning guy Pete Fornucate (Fornitale)
never guessed what the mice were doing on the overnight.
For what it's worth Rhino has just about everything music and radio
related in it's archives, they do more than sell oldies compilation
albums. If you want 60s R&R radio DJ air checks Rhino has them! Somebody
has a collection of Jean's shows complete and aired them on WBCQ 7415 but
being without an antenna and their internet feed usually AFU I haven't
listened to them lately and don't know if they're still being aired.
Listening to that rambling punctuated by his unique chuckle and "hit the
money button" comment right before the jingle came on and he read the
commercial HIS way sure brought back memories. Funny how I can't remember
the names of the guys on WBZ, KB, Wonderful WOWO and the others, my brain
is stuck in the salt marsh outside New York City where the towers grow.
This is getting long and boring for the lurkers (if any) and I sure wish
somebody would chime in and tell us about the time the BBC was hijacked
by pirates and other interesting stuff. I cased the scene thinking of
hijacking WOR's transmitter but when I saw the motion detectors I thought
better of it... oh well. Half the area stations hijacked my station ID
jingles and general weirdness including a 40 minute broadcast of Walter
Cronkite's knickers in knots coverage of the Apollo landing and I
couldn't even get near that RCA BTA50G Ampliphase to get MY revenge.
Well, maybe I did in a round about and somewhat delayed way, the worst
robber was WFMU and I cheered the day the music died and Upsala choked on
it's own vomit.
Now if I could only get a job working in a tank.......
