Hi Rudolph and readers,

Quite correct in all you wrote, I remember those receivers that could
find zero beat quite easily, most Amateur receivers could too. If not or
for those who like hi-fi AM a tweak of the AGC and audio chain would
extend the audio response down to a few cycles.

I remember the HF long distance telephone stations, the closest
transatlantic station to here is now defunct just a few miles to the
south in Ocean Gate. The last to go silent were Polish and caught the ear
of a Polish-American friend one day while we were tuning around. They
used reduced carrier split DSB carrying one channel on LSB and another on
USB. Then there was the CW station in West Creek farther south which I
believe is still in limited operation using digital modes.

Only last year I heard a few SWBC stations using SSB and others testing,
the system never got off the ground for some odd reason even though the
better receivers can receive SSB and the top of the line units can lock
in on the pilot carrier. Now the trend is digital and I expect to hear
DAB or it's equivelent on shortwave.

The days of SWBC HF relays is long gone over to satellite so now the
relays are broadcasters. You can't tell where the signal is coming from
anymore, SWBC DXing somehow lost it's appeal to me so now I just listen
and don't bother sending a QSL letter. Uh huh, my old cards are turning
yellow. (;->)
