Lancing in West Sussex had treacle mines too. Buried deep in the South
Downs.

I think they closed them down about the same time as the British Rail
Carriage Works which is now the Churchill Industrial Estate in Lancing.

They're a funny lot in Lancing. It's the largest and biggest populated
village in England.

Has all the features of a town, a station, Woolworths, Boots, Somerfields,
a football ground, British Legion, sports centre, beach, estate agents,
betting shops, yobs and used to have the Luxor Cinema.

But it's still a village. It's village green is on the sea front where the
wartime concrete blocks, to resist invasion, are now becoming exposed
again.

They buried them under topsoil but over the years soil erosion has made
them pop up through the grass again.

And as we leave Lancing with the sun slowly sinking in the West we come to
Worthing. The largest town in West Sussex where the posh people live with
two Conservative members of parliament serving the Borough.

And no less than five railway stations. East Worthing, Worthing Central,
West Worthing, Durrington-on-Sea and Goring-by-Sea.

What we don't have anymore is Worthing tomatoes. All the nurseries have
gone, replaced with homes that first time buyers can't afford.

Prices are an average of around 260K. I'm told mine is worth more than
that but I'm staying put so can't put it to the test.

Now.... where did I put that last pot of treacle?
