Hi  Jocelyn, an all linux users, all modules are already supported in the kernel.
If you want to use YAM modem, simply type:
# modprobe yam
take a look in your /var/log/messages after:
Jan 29 11:57:59 ik1yph kernel: YAM driver version 0.8 by F1OAT/F6FBB

you are ready!
 You do not have to compile the kernel, because MDK include all ax25 modules
ready to use.
