Hi Brett and all,

I'm far from the scientist but here goes based on the best of my 
knowlege. How would one go about designing a variable filter? It seems to 
me if it were possible using current technology we'd already have them. 
Current ones are what may be called fixed LP, HP and BP filters.

The sensor matrix in a video or digital camera is much like film inasmuch 
as it is most sensitive to only a small portion of the spectrum which is 
what makes them useful. If they were broad spectrum we'd have a world of 
trouble with external filtering which is what further narrows the 
spectrum. Too much is too much, imagine your confusion if you had broad 
spectrum eyes.

The bandpass of a polarizing filter is largely dependent on it's 
substrate material, width and spacing of the grid lines. I haven't 
checked any scientific catalogs lately, one specializing in optics would 
be most helpful unless someone in the biz happens to read these bulls.

You'd be surprised what an on line search engine can turn up, "optics" 
would be a good place to start.
