There is a patent of 11 April, 1916, which names Arthur Cyril Webb ALDIS.
(it was published 1920)

The accompagnying figure quite clearly shows an old model of what we all
know as the "Aldis Daylight Signalling Lamp".

There are many more patents, up to the "modern" version, all in the same
name, later in the name of "Aldis Brothers Ltd", Birmingham.
Later they were known for optics, slide and film projectors etc.

Aldis made gunsights as well.
