Hi Graham and readers,
All of what you said amounts to good operating practice be it in a conest
or otherwise. Good ops get the contacts, lids are ignored, plain and
simple. Then again there are certain tricks that get attention but of
course the best ones fall within the realm of good operating practice.
While "tailing" often works, persistance often works much better even if
it only serves to annoy the DX station you're trying to contact.
A few years ago I was trying to bust the "kilowatt curtain" with a
"measly" 100W and finally got that rare DX I was after. I sat there
doggedly calling, trying every trick in the book and ended up writing one
of my own, maybe a world record for being a royal pain while doing so.
For over an hour and a half I called, finally the DX came back with the
comment that he was only going back to the big guns and was amazed at
this peanut whistle's persistance. He admitted he only came back to shut
me up! Well, I got a QSL card out of the deal! (;->)
Well, it just goes to show "whatever works" is the rule as long as you
don't spoil it for everyone by being a lid. Speaking of which, nobody has
yet mentioned the "DX police" who insist on parking on the split and yell
at anyone making the mistake of thinking the DX is working simplex. Oh,
don't you just LOVE a lid yelling a load of rubbish on the DX station's
transmit frequency just as he gives that callsign you have been patiently
waiting so long to copy? Some just HAVE to be the director rather than
just letting the DX station periodically announce "listening up" or
"listening from-to" so the person realizes his own mistake which would
cut out all the needless QRM which has often led to the DX signing off in
disgust.
