Hi Ian and all,
Since you brought it up and are WAY closer than Pete I may as well let
the cat out of the bag right here. Pizza AS WE KNOW IT TODAY originated
in New York during the height of Italian immigration after the turn of
the 20th century. Speaking of which, mention Al Capone and most think of
Chicago but it all started in Brooklyn, New York. Just for mention, the
derogatory term wop came about because of the illegals, without papers.
Never mind the bad apples, the good part is what started out in New York
as an experiment went to Italy, was refined into SO many tasty variations
and returned as finished products of scores of family recipes.
Frankly that squid with his moldy pizza should have been cut up as fish
bait and I'm sure the local don would have put a contract on him if he
found out.
I don't know what sort of Chinese food you may be familiar with but I've
eaten it all, the proverbial soup to nuts. I must thank the Chinese
friends up north for introducing me to the real McChang (;->) entirely
different from the delacasies they serve to us in the restaurant. If you
have been in one that has the menu strips in Chinese hanging on the wall
they're not for decoration, they're secret code for authentic Chinese
food. Yeah, Chop Suey isn't Chinese food, it's Chinese for fast food. San
Francisco got the honor but actually belongs to the Coolies on the
railroad track gangs, their (separate) "chuck wagon" cooks came up with a
tasty way to throw scraps together and feed the workers in a hurry.
Probably SF was where it became a more or less standard recipe?
Pizza may be "unhealthy slop" but it tastes SO GOOD why are you surprised
so many send out for it? Well, maybe they got so fat they can't waddle
down to the pizza shop and squeeze into a booth. Anchovies? Nah, I seldom
eat pizza (way too expensive) and NEVER one that looks back at me!
