Hmmm, interesting - well slightly.

Where did pizza come from ?

We get a lot of historical TV programmes, especially ones about the
Romans,
In places like Pompei, pictures exist showing what they ate and some
modern people even prode themselves making Roman dishes with fish suace
instead of salt and largely bread based yet not a one of them bears any
resemblance to a pizza.

It is a bit like madern Italians don't speak the language of their Roman
forefahters and the modern Greeks are even worse.

Nonetheless, I remember Pizzas and other fast foods, reaching our shores
in the late 50s as we started to be able to afford them. We just thought
of them as overpriced American imports. The first of these was Chinese,
Hong Kong type and the cheapest chop suey chow mein, not really Chines at
all but actually Chines for left - overs, so I was told,

So it is possible that Pizzas were really invented in the US by Italian
immigrants after the war.

I worked for a few months in a pizzeria in 1990, only supposed to be a
driver but they had me doing a bit of everything. What was interesting
was, that after work, the cooks would all get together and cook something
excellent, if the boss wasn't around. The cooke all sorts of excellent
dishes, mainly carne dishes but never, ever pizza. I don't blame them.

A pizza started with a dough made from flour to which was added ground
bread and pizza casings which had been drying on top of the ovens, many of
these were green. Then you chucked in cheese, prosciuto and sloppy
mediteranean tomatoes, the cheapest they could find. Top off with various
bits to give it taste, e.g. anchovies. I actually like them but not
everyday. I can't say that working for Da Giorgio put me off pizzas, I
hadn't eaten them for years, they are just too unhealthy. If I lived in a
better area, I would treat myself to a Szechuan dish, true Chinese cooking
by Chinese people. The best outlet for that which I have met was at the
bottom of Warmoestraat in Amsterdam, a bit to far to go for a meal. You do
get real Chinese and Italian as well and even better in France where the
food laws are very strict. The large selection of foods in France is very
good but, again, too far to go and despite all using the Euro, close on
double the price of Holland.

I repeat; my guess is that Pizzas, and other take aways, mostly unhealthy
slop, probably originated in the USA after WW II. What surprises me is
that people still send out for it, in fact some people in the richer areas
like London, don't even possess a cooking a ppliance with the possible
exception of a microwave oven to keep the take aways warm.

I can't comment on other foods in mainland Europe like Tex Mex. I would
need to go to Texas to get a true idea of what that is supposed to taste
like. I suppose the nearest we get is the collection od Spanish dishes
sold in Spain. Arrrriba! Keep on cooking gents. I am beginneing to think
that a 'skillet' is some kind of large iron frying pan, so I'm learning
slowly.

I might even contribute with something like Lancashire hot pot and
Goulash(throw in a bit of paprika), followed by Black Pudding and Tripe -
Lovely !
