"Date Rolls
Typed by Michael ZL1ABS
Ingredients
8 ounces (225 grams) Plain Flour
Pinch of Salt
2 Teaspoons Baking Powder
2 ounces (50 grams) Butter
2 ounces (50 grams) Sugar
4 ounces (100 grams) Dates (chopped)
1 Egg
Milk to mix
Pinch of Cinnamon (topping)
1 Tablespoon sugar (topping)
Instructions
Sift flour, salt and baking powder together. Rub in butter, add sugar and
dates. Beat egg and add to mixture, mixing in sufficient milk to make a
fairly stiff dough. Turn on to a floured board, form into a roll and cut
into equal portions. Place on cold greased trays. Bake at 425 degrees
Fahrenheit (215 degrees Celsius). When cooked, brush over with hot water
and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar topping. Dry in oven."
From my mother's old New Zealand cookery book (1956 edition), printed by a
maker of baking powder, custard powder, cornflour and jelly crystals.
