Hi Barry and others,
One thing that has become apparent to me is that scientific attitude has
changed in respect to the basic approach to science.
Currently science has taken the widespread approach that we must , "cut
back", "renounce all previous scientific advances", because we are all
"doomed", "doomed", "doomed", global warming, peak oil and various other
fates await us......
What happened to the attitude that science is the great saviour and will
rise above and solve all these problems? When was the previous sentiment
of optimism replaced by this universal negativism?
Historically it is this negative attitude that has seen the downfall of
almost all the previous great empires. They were over run by younger more
vibrant forward looking cultures.
There have been many previous civilisations that have perished because
they took the turtle approach and refused to take action to solve their
technological challenges. It appears to me that our current civilisation
is doing exactly that. We are being foist with the denial policy of a
minor, but very vocal group who would "like us to freeze to death in the
dark" to satisfy their own manic depressive feelings.
One could probably argue that since the discovery of atomic power there
has been no new branch of science discovered.
All science that we are currently using appears to be developments made on
inventions nearly a century old. We are long overdue for a completely new
branch of science to be discovered, based on the frequency of previous
fundamental discoveries.
A fundamental discovery to my way of thinking is for example, the wheel,
or electricity. Transistors, valves, and computers are not new discoveries
but developments of the basic electricity discovery.
It's time scientists put the science back into their work and started to
generate the world saving science they are paid to produce instead of
spouting cart loads of populist negative ideas.
