While I agree that biomass fuels do reduce the land available for food
production. They had this as part of their problems in Brazil, years ago.
I cannot see what is wrong with producing cheap, clean fuels from
renewable sources which also make it unnecessary to kill off G.I.s in the
mid east.
I have said it before and I stick by it. Let them go back to herding goats
and camels. The use of petroleum was a big mistake. It lead to us being
held to ransom.
As for the bio diesel, we can produce that in wet, cold Britain from the
rape plant. In fact the government is considering taxing anyone who uses
cooking oil for vehicles.
As for ethanol. We made it during WW II, to mix with petrol from sugar
beet which is as easy to grow as potatatoes so we shouldn't need to buy
anything from other countries.Petroleum will still be necessary to make
certain chemicals and plastics but only a small fraction of what is
required to fuel 'gas guzzlers' from Arabic oil.
BTW. Not all newspaper stories are plain statements of fact. Some have a
hidden agenda. It's worth checking.
