Hi Gerard,
It had the same problem with a 23cm FM model of the same radio, a TM541A.
The problem was heat related as it never happened when the radio was cold.
The trouble was more often in Summer as the radio was in my car.
The radio still operated Ok, even when the display was rubbish figures.
I sold that radio to my Canadian friend VE7OVY. It never got hot enough in
Canada to be as problem for the radio, HI.
I think he sold that radio to someone in the USA a few years later on.
So I have no answer, but sympathies with the trouble. I still have the
same radio model for 2m, 70cm & 23cm, but none of the other examples I own
have developed display trouble after some years of use.
There I go tempting trouble to happen, HI.
