Dear Friends,
please find below the PR version of the latest JOTA circular of the World Scout
Bureau in Geneva.
Packet-Radio version of the latest JOTA circular with updated latest
information.
Circular No 21/97 Geneva, 5 October 1997.
Here it is, the jubilee 40th Jamboree-On-The-Air, 18 - 19 October 1997 !!
The JOTA is an annual event in which about 500,000 Scouts and Guides all
over the world make contact with each other by means of amateur radio. It is
a real Jamboree during which Scouting experiences are exchanged and ideas are
shared, thus contributing to the world brotherhood of Scouting.
The JOTA is a world-wide event. Units may operate for 48 hours or any part
thereof, from Saturday 00.00 h until Sunday 24.00 h local time.
Details of the JOTA organization were already published in our first JOTA
circular 10/97, issued in May 1997. Please read this circular again and
check it for important details, in particular of the following jubilee
programme suggestions:
The logo hunt
Try to collect all 39 JOTA logo's that are stored on various web sites by
surfing the web and asking around by radio.
The missing card...Make a design how you think the participation card
for the first JOTA should have looked like.
The 40 craze.
Everything with 40.
Where old meets new.
Set up an amateur radio station with equipment from the 50's and 60's.
Thank you radio amateurs....
Invite speakers from amateur radio organisations.
Display.
Set up a display of photographs of the JOTA during the past 40 years.
This too is Scouting
Invite the local press to your station.
The JOTA guest book.
The World Bureau's special JOTA guest book on its email server in Geneva
The surprise radio message.
Without having to search the bands yourself, you can suddenly get all sorts
of scout voices in your radio room. Surprise!
GB / HB9S activities.
The radio station of the World Scout Bureau, HB9S, will operate this year
from the very birthplace of the JOTA: the scout building of the 79th Reading
Scouts in Tilehurst, Berkshire, United Kindom. Because of this, its radio
call sign will carry the United Kingdom identification in front: GB / HB9S.
It was at this very same location that the first try-out for the JOTA was
held in 1957 by Les Mitchell, G3BHK, who is regarded as the founder of the
JOTA. The same location was choosen for the first official JOTA in 1958. It
turned out that the scout premises of the 79th Reading still exist today.
The station will be very similar to the one used 40 years ago, but with
modern equipment. We are planning an historic jubilee transmission in AM
(amplitude modulation), on Saturday 18 October. The schedule for this
transmission is as follows (world scout frequencies are used throughout):
time (GMT) band
10.00 h 20 m
16.00 h 40 m
22.00 h 80 m
A transmission in AM can also be received by a "normal" radio, meant for
broadcast short-wave reception. You will need an extra external antenna to
connect to such a radio, but it will be fun for the scouts to try and catch
a glimpse of this transmission. Amplitude modulation was commonly used by
radio amateurs in the old days. It is more prone to disturbance. So we do
hope that amateurs and scout are courteous to their fellow JOTA participants
and keep the frequency clear during these transmissions.
The operator team will consist of:
Yves, HB9AOF, WSB station manager Richard,PA3BAR, World Scout Bureau
Len VE3MYF, former WJO Les, G3BHK, JOTA founder
John, G4KGT Ben, G7WHO
Alan, G3WNS Barbara, G8AKU
Geoff, G4UEL Jeff, G3SDG
An extra pair of ears for HB9S will be formed by an SWL station just outside
Reading. Equipped with modern short-wave receivers, and manned by scouts it
will help us to scan the bands for JOTA stations. The scouts will pass the
information to us via a digital radio link. So make yourselfs heard on the
bands and we might tune in to your frequency.
The World Scout Bureau's radio station GB/HB9S will operate most of the
Saturday and Sunday, with short breaks during the night. Transmitters will
be on the air simultaneously on the 10/15/20 metre, 160/80/40 metre and
0.7/2 metre bands, mostly on or nearby the world scout frequencies.
World Scout Frequencies:
Band SSB(phone) CW(morse)
80 m 3.740 & 3.940 MHz 3.590 MHz
40 m 7.090 MHz 7.030 MHz
20 m 14.290 MHz 14.070 MHz
17 m 18.140 MHz 18.080 MHz
15 m 21.380 MHz 21.140 MHz
12 m 24.960 MHz 24.910 MHz
10 m 28.990 MHz 28.190 MHz
Requests for skeds can be send in advance to:
via packet: HB9S @ HB9IAP
via email: JOTA @ world.scout.org
Making a contact with GB/HB9S takes some patience in practice. Usually many
stations are calling at the same time. Please follow the instructions given
by the operators and do not interfere with on-going contacts. The operators
will do the best they can to make contact with scout stations world-wide and
speak to scouts in as many languages as possible.
Logo competition.
Every year the JOTA has a new annual logo on its participation card. After
40 years we have run out of designs........
Join us in the challenge to design JOTA participation cards for the next
decade, up to the 50th JOTA !
Here's what you must do:
Make a design for a JOTA participation card.
The card must be A5 size (14.7 X 10.5 cm)
The cards must be camera-ready; this means that no further work in restyling
may be needed. In general hand-drawn designs need to be enhanced before they
can be printed.
The design must not be too busy; think of it as a design for a badge.
All designs must be in black-and-white.
Each country can only send ONE card for each JOTA of the coming decade
(41th JOTA up to the 50th JOTA), so a maximum of 10 cards. The designs must
be different for each year.
Clearly mark the name and address of the designer on the back of the card.
The designs must be free of copy rights; the World Scout Bureau reserves the
right to publish the design.
The entries need to be received in Geneva by the 31st of December 1997 at
the latest, together with the National JOTA Report.
A jury will select the winning cards, one for each coming JOTA. Each winning
design will be awarded with a super prize from the World Scout Shop: scout
shopping bags, JOTA or Scouting books or camping utilities. The wining
designs will be published in the next World JOTA Report.
A National preselection can be held as yet another jubilee-JOTA activity.
National JOTA Reports.
JOTA organizers are requested to send a report to the World Scout Bureau
soon after the event.
The World Bureau is very much interested to get an impression of what the
JOTA was like in your country. Please put your ideas and comments,
suggestions for future programmes and description of the most important
and interesting contacts that were made in your National JOTA report.
A summary of it will be published in the World JOTA Report, of which each
NJO and Scout Association will receive a copy. The figures that are
requested on the report form will be used to compile some statistics.
A reasonable estimate would be appreciated if they cannot be specified
accurately. Please feel free to include any other information on separate
papers.
Photographs are especially important this year. We would like to present
a historic overview in the World Report. Can each NJO please search his
archives and look for photo's of the early JOTA's in his country (period
1960 - 1990) ? In general, photo's are needed, old and recent ones, showing
scouts in uniform at the microphone. Pictures of other activities like
electronic kitbuilding, foxhunting, semaphore, map plotting and the like
are most welcome. And how about the self-constructed masts and antennas or
a station set up at an unusual location? We're curious to see them.
The World Report editor would very much appreciate it if you could send any
additional report text in English on a computer disk or via email. You may
use any MS-DOS or Macintosh formatted disk with the text in ASCII format or
formatted according to any popular word processor. Alternatively, you may
use electronic mail and send your file to: JOTA@world.scout.org. Clearly
mention "JOTA Report" in the subject line.
In any case, send your report to the World Scout Bureau before the 31st of
December 1997 !!
Last-minute information.
This circular is the last information you receive before the JOTA weekend.
If there is any last-minute information of general interest, it will be
distributed electronically. Check the SCOUTS@WW directory of your local
packet-radio bbs and the WOSM web site on internet at URL
http://www.scout.org.
Finally.
The JOTA is an excellent opportunity to meet Scouts, Guides and others from
many countries. Exchange ideas, learn about other cultures and habits and
make new friends. This year's JOTA is special: the 40th edition of WOSM's
largest annual gathering will show the world that Scouts Care. They
experience the International Brotherhood of World Scouting, they care
about mutual understanding and respect between people of all nations,
and thus make a difference: Scouts caring for the world.
I wish you all a most enjoyable weekend.
Sincerely,
Richard Middelkoop, PA3BAR
