Increased Power for Contests
The Society is continuing to pursue with ComReg the
question of securing increased power for the duration of
contests on a list of international HF and VHF contests
still to be finalised. In order to take this matter
further, ComReg wish to have submitted a list of licensed
amateurs who would be interested in getting permission to
operate with increased power for the contests concerned.
Anyone who wishes to have their name included on this
list should e mail the contest manager Thos Caffrey EI2JD
at contestmanager@irts.ie or to thoscaffrey@hotmail.com

HAM RADIO 2010
The now famous HAM RADIO took place in Friedrichshafen
from 25th to 27th June. A large contingent of EIs
travelled to the rally. Some flew to Zurich and by train
and ferry to Friedrichshafen while others flew to
Memmingen and onwards by train. The lucky few were on
holiday and took in the Friedrichshafen rally in their
travels.
Similar to the last number of years IRTS had a stand at
the rally. The two themes displayed on the stand were the
Engineers Ireland Steps Programme in which the Society
has had a significant involvement for the last two years
and 'How Radio Amateurs got their Bands'. The latter
theme was illustrated by a set of charts from the second
part of a lecture on this theme by John EI7BV.
These eleven charts traced the changes in frequency
allocations in the VHF/UHF/SHF bands over the various
World Radio Conferences starting with the one in Atlantic
City in 1947.
There was a large attendance of visitors to the rally on
each day and the flea market section really has to be
seen to be believed. Centrepiece of the Yaesu stand was
the FTDX 5000. This is a 200 watt HF and 50 MHz
transceiver with two independent receivers and an
optional real time band scope. It seems to have a first
class, low noise receiver and was generating considerable
interest.
Eighteen EIs signed in at the IRTS stand and we would
like to particularly thank those who gave some of their
exhibition time to staff the stand.

OFCOM Ethernet devices report
OFCOM, the UK's telecoms regulator, has released a report
on interference issues caused by power line Ethernet
devices.
The report concludes that improved notching and power
control are necessary to prevent interference and that as
the speed of these devices increases, bands up to 300MHz
are potentially subject to interference.
The report can be found via a google search.
