Theory Classes and Mentors

The Society is running a series of advertisements in various publications,
including Buy and Sell, over the next month. Members of the public
interested in finding out more about Amateur Radio and the license exam are
invited to contact the Society. Many of the inquiries will relate to exam
courses. We would be grateful if clubs running, or intending to run, exam
classes would contact Sean EI7CD or Paul EI2CA with details.

No doubt we will have inquiries from individuals in locations where there
are no classes available. In these cases we would like to assign 'mentors'
who can encourage and support those studying for the exam. With the new
Course Guide available on CD for the student, the role of the mentor is
really 'non technical' and within the capability of any licensed operator.
In addition IRTS will provide a support service to mentors and indeed those
running courses where this is requested. If you receive a request from the
Society over the next few weeks to act as a mentor, please consider it
seriously. You will be performing an important service, not just to the
individual student, but also to the Society and amateur radio in general.

Once again we would ask Clubs to send us details of possible classes being
formed for the coming session.

SSB Field Day

Last weekend saw the annual SSB Field day contest. Three stations were
active from the central location of Garbally College in Ballinasloe, The
Shannon Basin Radio Club, EI3Z, Dalky Island Group, EI1DD, and the Galway
Radio Club, EI4GRC. The Tipperary Radio Club had a station in Kilkenny.

Although band conditions were relatively poor, good scores are expected,
with possibly a very close finish. Bad WX did not effect the weekend's
enjoyment and the now famous Shannon Basin Club barbeque was a huge
success, thanks to the club and to chef Tony EI3HA, as well as to Fr Niall
EI4CF for the use of the fabulous college grounds.

Lets hope that next years field days can be even bigger and better. Would
all stations that took part in the field day and the 2 metres counties
please forward their logs to the contest manager EI8IU by post to QTHR or
via email to "contests at irts dot ie" or "brianei8iu at eircom dot net".
