Well said Peter, you've taken four lines to say what took me two pages to
say. Whether or not people like or dislike IRLP, a few more like Ian, and
a few less like Renzo would work wonders for amateur radio.

To set up IRLP on a repeater takes more effort than to not do.
To use IRLP takes the same effort as to not do.

One obvious thing which had't crossed my mind, is that due to time
differences around the world, IRLP-linked repeaters are often used
during the night when otherwise, they'd be idle.

IRLP doesn't interest me at all, but if it interests others, I'm really
pleased for them. I'm no more interested in IRLP than in contests, which
to my mind bring out the worst in people and fill the bands with what can
only be termed wall-to-wall QRM. However, others derive a great deal of
enjoyment from contests, and there's plenty of time for others when there
are no contests on at all.

Ian will carry on regardless, as indeed he should, undaunted by the
insults. As things stand, IRLP seems to be gaining ground, whereas
packet is losing out. Any ideas for reviving the hobby?

I didn't even know that an IRLP repeater has been set up 10kM from here on
430.0625 MHz. I've just been speaking to a local amateur who went into it
yesterday while he was mobile in Hull, and spoke to an amateur in
Hamilton, Canada. I'm sure both amateurs enjoyed the contact - nothing
wrong with that is there? It sure beats coming onto packet and falling
out with a grumpy Italian.
