Hi Hugh,

I wonder if you have ever come across a similar principle of speed
control, but using a salt water bath as the resistance element?

I once saw this in regular use at a power station in the Midlands. The
bath was some 15' tall, 8' wide and around 20' long. The electrodes on a
frame, were raised and lowered by large chain driven rack. I seem to
remember this controlled the speed of a 3.3kv motor.
