Whoops Warren you made a mistake there.
The capacitors are not fitted to make the meters read correctly but to
correct the power factor and so keep the current lower than it would
be otherwise. The meters read the amount of power delivered no matter what the
phase angle of the current.
You see these capacitors fitted to fluoescent lamps to correct the lagging
phase caused by the ballast. Hhmmm, as the voltage drop accross a fluo lamp
is about 100 or so volts, do you use ballasts at all in the US ?
If not how do you get them to start ?
Anyway in large buildings etc there are special meters used that indicate the
degree of power factor on the installation and increase the electricity bill
to compensate for the extra current carrying capacitor that has to be
provided.
This extra charge has the effect of encouraging the customer to do something
about his power factor.
Incidently, I remember something about using an alternator as a motor and
over exciting the field winding and so producing a leading phase angle and so
correcting the phase angle of the whole works site. From memory this was
done in the BHP steel works north of here at Newcastle.
Anyone know about this technique ?
