Well having read many bulls on this topic and all very interesting I thought
I may as well chuck in my two penny worth !!!
My Father ( now long passed on ) once told me that there are or perhaps now
that is were ? heavy DC Cables under London for the original plan was to
power the city by DC ? not 100% sure but only as he told me.
As to the use of AC I think anyone Ham should be well aware of the ohms laws
and the fact that High Voltage will jump gaps and high current burns out
cables, thus the old VIR or Volcanised Insulated Rubber used on the older
cables for wiring was in itself a little leaky and thus high voltage was out,
tests showed the optimum voltage to be around 200 but from a mathematical
point of view it made more sence to use 250 as this then made the 3 phase
voltage 500 and in days before computers and electronic calculators !!! easy
to see why, but just in case ? transformer windings and cable sizes Etc Etc.
230 Volt has only come in to standardise things, Ireland was 220 until
recently and try heating a UK 250 Volt kettle or anything with 220 V ?
We moved over in 87 and all our household gear was of course 240-250 and most
things like Kettles Etc had to be replaced, good for businness I suppose.
The transfer of AC is of course much simpler than DC as you can use a
transformer and step it up to real high voltage while this then reduces the
current and thus the wires size / resistance and becomes more efficiant over
a long distance all be more deadly and calls for greater protection.
I can NOT claim this as the definative answer to the 110 Volt situation in
many countries but let me put this to you.
Most marine equipment is a maximum 110 Volt ? it would not do to have high
voltages even 200+, floating around on board a ship that is at best a little
wet and at worst ? they may also use some lower voltages and even DC
dependant in the size of the ship and no doubt lots of readers will put me
right on this, but my point is simple ?
Given the shiping movement and Salvage situation, plus the building up of
small communities, would it not make sence to make best possible use of that
which is available for free ? Ie the Ship generator that is 110 Volt ?
remember that for the bigest part of time the settlements were close to shore
and when moved inland ? so take the generator and power it with a windmill ?
I do not claim this to be the definative answer but just possibly it makes
sence as to use what is to hand even if it is only light bulbs ?
On the 13 Amp ring main principle, a very good idea and I served my time when
it was introduced in the UK but on comming to Ireland I was confused to note
that while we here have no Ring main system, we do use the 13 Amp fused plugs
which is a little bit strange, I once asked the question WHY ? I was told
that most of the older houses would not have sufficiant outlets for 2 ring
main circuits ? Hmm I asked why 2 and was told that if the fuse went on one
circuit then you still have a second to keep things going ? hmm is that not
the point of having a fuse in each plug I asked ? at this point I gave up.
This property has 3x6 Amp MCB's for lighting 2x20 Amp MXB's for Cooker and
Imersion heater and 4X16 for the socket, thats 9 circuits in all and the
wiring up in the lopft looks like a spiders web !!! If I had my way and could
do it without breaking the local regulations, I would rewire the lot, 2
lighting and 2 power MCB's would be a much neater job and provide just the
same protection, especialy as we use these 13 amp fused plugs anyway.
Just some thoughts and personal observations.
