In Australia both Shellite and White Spirit were odourless kerosene
(paraffin in the UK!), not explosive as petrol is. This was the reason for
the metho starting; the burner had to be hot to vapourise the kero. My
other used white spirit for drycleaning clothes. I am talking of the 1930s
and 40s here.
The Primus camping stoves of the 1930s were brand name OPTIMUS and were
manufactured in Sweden. They were brass, round standing on steel rod legs
with a single burner and a round frame on top to hold the kettle. There was
no needle valve in these, just a small screw near the pump that was
unscrewed far enough to let the pressure down.
