ACTUALLY AWARE.

Warren KB2VXA said;

" Perhaps you missed my bulls on OMEGA and a few others saying it was
discontinued. The navigation end of it was outdated and the messaging
system impractical for alert traffic, which BTW was one way to the subs.

Perhaps that fellow was thinking of GWEN, Ground Wave Emergency Network,
which uses a variety of above ground antennas tailored to the frequency in
use. "

One section within a scientific group of which I was a member did a great
deal of experimentation using the Omega transmissions.

They had a Land Rover vehicle which carried a somewhat large (for mobile
purposes) top loaded antenna and covered many miles carrying out constant
measurements. The large land areas in Australia do lend themselves well to
operations of such a nature.

They were able to achieve results which I understand were quite a deal
more accurate than those generally achieved by experiments mounted in
other areas.

I am well aware that the Omega system has not been extant for quite some
years now, however, I did not see any bulletins from Warren KB2VXA on the
subject.

It seems to me that we see little or nothing in the way of interesting
Packet Radio messages which must certainly be originating from other
countries. (USA, UK, Europe, Africa etc.)
.
Surely there are other technical discussions which must be occurring.

On the subject of the ELF system, I am sure that my friend is unlikely to
have become confused with GWEN as he did indicate a particular frequency
in the ELF portion of the spectrum which had been in use.

I have to wonder, regarding any high power ELF operation, as to the
likelihood of such signals having an effect regarding any of the earth's
"fault" lines. Or, would a slight, man made, rumble be unlikely to have
any noticeable effect at all?

Signals of such a nature would surely have to be extremely high powered to
have travelled any distances via the earth's structure itself as well as
via the ocean.

I find this latter aspect of such signals rather puzzling but potentially
fascinating.

Maybe one should "keep an ear to the ground" at all times.

(Perhaps the American Indians really had something here in the way of
communications systems!)

Regards,

Ian
